Proform cheats you

I bought a treadmill from proform and a month later it broke down. I sent them an e-mail and told them about it. They keep telling me to try this and to try that and one day the E-mails stopped. I called them and said non of this is working could you send somebody out. They said sure for $140. I said no this is covered in the warranty. Turns out since I never actually "asked" them to come out and fix it that it was not included in the warranty and since the 90 days was up they were no longer obligated to fix it. A dirty little trick since I complained of the malfunction while the warranty was still active. Turns out that the e-mails stopped right at the 90 day mark when the warranty expired.

I paid the $140 to have somebody come out. The money was withdrawn from my account withing minutes of the phone call. However, a technician was not sent out until 8 weeks later after I called them several times. One time they tried to charge me again for the repair call. To fix the machine would have cost me more than I paid so it ended up going to salvation army. Even the technician said that proform was a shady company. Not only do they pull this type of thing all the time but they lie about the treadmills. This treadmill advertised that it could handle people up to 250 pounds, yet the repair man told me he would not suggest that any one over 160 pounds use it.

Proform is a terrible company who makes a terrible product and I will never do business with them again. Don't waste you time or your money on this piece of garbage. I cannot stress enough that you should stay clear from these scam artists.

Proform treadmill impressions

Pros:
very easy setup, instructions are concise
powerful motor, sturdy frame
well coushioned belt
easy to read panel with handy quarter mile track readout
Cons:
Forget getting any tech-support from ProForm. Impossible to get them on the phone, be prepared to spend HOURS to contact.
Only ninety day full warranty
Fan real noisy, can't use fan and hear iPod at same time
Heart rate monitor on handgrips worthless. If you are buying for a cardio-workout and want accurate information be prepared to buy separate monitor with chest strap.
Display panel settings cannot be changed. You can't just monitor heart rate for example.
Bottom line
this is NOT a $699.00 treadmill; it is maybe a bargin @ 599.00 with free shipping.
IMHO this a $ 499.00 treadmill

Great for the Price!

I love this treadmill! It is a great bargain amongst treadmills. I am not a serious runner, just starting out. I love the automatic speed and incline controls, and I like that there is a magazine rack, cubby holes for my drink and ipod. I do find it is loud when I go over 6.5mp, so I do not recommend it for people who are looking to run a quick pace. I do also use the fan, which someone said on high speed was too loud to hear their music, but I did not find that to be a problem. So if you are looking to get in shape, are just starting out, and are on a limited budget, I highly recommend this treadmill.

ProForm 980 CS Treadmill

I purchased this item through Amazon on 2011-Dec-06. It arrived on December 18 through prior arrangement with the local freight carrier (Pilot Freight).
The day it arrived there was only one driver; he and I had to bull this thing up two flights of steps and along a 40-feet long sidewalk. Its shipping weight is 235 pounds.
We deposited it in the room where it was to be set up and used - fortunately, because it wasn't going anywhere else.
The room it is in has an 18-inch poured-concrete slab beneath it.

I started opening the shipping box and realized the front end was not pointing to the front. Asking my cockatiels to help swing it 180 degrees did not endear them to me.
About an hour later I had all the parts extracted and stored in neatish stacks around the room.

The manual - you *do* read the manual? - states that you should have at least two people for the assembly.
One can do it, it just takes a little more time, thought, and improvisation.
The manual is well written, laid-out well, and printed well. I recall no spelling, grammar, or typographical errors.

As with most products of this type you'll probably end up with a few extra bolts, nuts, or washers.
At two points during assembly you are required to tip the unit on its side and position and attach one of two support columns. With two people it's easy.

With one you need something to support the far end of the column as positioning and alignment is important.
A 32-gallon Rubbermaid trash barrel without the cover (that's what I had) is exactly the correct height for positioning.
When the far end is correctly supported the bolts line up perfectly with their threaded bushings.
I must note, also, that this product is one of the best-machined items I've seen or assembled.
Nothing was loose. Nothing was out of alignment. Parts Just Fit.
If any readers are familiar with the old Heathkit Electronics kits, the attention to detail in this product is every bit as high in my opinion.

If you have access to a ratchet set with sockets and Torx drivers, I'd suggest you use it.
Although the wrenches supplied work well, you won't get the torque that, in my opinion, you need to make this really solid.

Assembly took me about 5 hours all told; take your time and double-check things.
I enjoyed the assembly; I enjoy using the machine even more.

The treadmill has adjustable incline and variable speed.
The incline is adjustable in .5% or 1% increments from 0 to 12%.
Speed is adjustable in .1 mph or 1mph increments from 0 to 12mph.
The full-stop settings (0,1,2,3, etc) are available from dedicated buttons on the control panel.
Increments are selected by using one of the control arrow buttons below the columns of dedicated buttons.
Selected settings are clearly shown on a large backlighted LCD display with several display modes offered through a button on the control panel.

A pulse monitor is part of the system. By placing your right hand on the monitor "handle" below the control panel the system will switch on the monitor.
Grasping the other monitor "handle" with your left hand will allow the unit to read your pulse. It takes about 15 to 20 seconds to acquire a stable reading.
A wireless option with a chest-strap unit is available, but as of this review I've not tried it.

Built into the the console are 8 workouts selectable from a button on the console.
So far, I manually change settings as I feel the desire or need to go faster, slow down, or raise the incline.
Currently I use the machine one to two hours per day.

An intriguing feature I've not yet tried is called "iFit".
iFit workouts can be purchased on pre-programmed SD memory cards.
The cards are plugged into the SD slot on the console and the system reads the data from the card, automatically changing incline and speed as programmed.
Poking around Google reveals there are methods to create your own iFit-compatible recordings.

One more feature is a built-in audio system that can control most, if not all, members of the iPod family.
Lacking an iPod, a portable music player can also be used through the input connector at the back of the control panel.
Personally, I watch an episode of "Farscape" for each session.

I'll likely come back to this review for updates. For now I'll just note that I'm extremely happy with the machine, the quality of engineering, and smooth operation.

awesome treadmill

I just recently purchased this treamill and I love it. There are so many great features I don't even know where to begin. With so many different workouts out to choose from you will never get bored and with the adjustable belt you can run on a harder surface giving you the feeling that you are running outside or softer for those of us who have to go a little bit easier on our joints. For this price it was worth every penny.

Lasts 2yrs at most

Do not purchase this treadmill or any other Pro-Form products for that matter! We purchased this treadmill in Feb 2009 and shortly after starting having issues with it. First, the panel went dead; but covered under warranty so replaced for free. Second, the walking platform cracked, yes, cracked! Luckily, we were not injured, as this happened while running 10mph! We figured, this must be still cover by the warranty, but found out we were a few months shy. Then we figured, it must be covered as part of the lifetime frame warranty...nope. Come to find out, Pro-Form does not consider the walking board part of the frame. Long story short, if you are looking for a treadmill that will only last 2yrs, go ahead and waste your $. Otherwise, I would keep looking and stay away from any of their products.

Bad customer service with company

I order this machine in April and there was a part that did not fit and here it is July and I still have not received my part. Pro-Form keeps telling me that the part is backed order. I am thinking I will never get the correct part for this machine. Don't order this machine. Who knows if you will get all the correct parts to this machine.

This is made for walking, not running

I purchased this on clearance at Sports Authority for $240. I'd say I got a deal for that amount but would never pay double that for this model. It's very noisy which increases at higher speeds. There is no way this would be a good treadmill for running but it's suitable for the faster walking workouts I was looking for. I would buy a sturdier machine if I had to do it over again. It wasn't difficult to put together at all.

i got this so i could work out when i came home from work.. it works for walking fast i do agree.. it was a beast for me to assemble but i did it by myself.. and also i hate putting things together.. so far so good except it started squeeking the moment i started it up....

So far, bad experience

Purchased from and shipped by Amazon. Received item sooner than expected, Friday afternooon delivery. Very large box slightly damaged and opened at two corners. Opened box as directed, removed and unwrapped all items. Realized that there was no manual or paperwork of any kind in box. After carefully sifting thru all packaging to make sure, I tried to contact Proform by phone. (Amazon says you have to deal with the manufacturer directly.) After 30 minutes on hold for assistance, I used information from the box label to access Proform Website and after much ado was able to access and print out the 28 page manual. Frustrated at wasting about 90 minutes, but relieved. Husband (experienced machinist) commenced to assemble. Several parts missing rendering it unusable, and Left Cover of pedal disc is broken off and clips and screws missing. Manual shows Saturday Customer service hours, but this is not so, will have to wait until Monday. Will update review, but right now kicking myself for online purchase.
Update: Sent email to Proform on Saturday regarding damaged/missing items. They responded that evening asking for further info, which I furnished immediately. Sent two emails during week asking for order status with no response. Called today (Thursday) and was told that although order request was on record, it had not been placed. Sturdy, well built and effective

I also purchased this machine using Costco online for $399.00/free shipping in early Jan. There are a few reasons for purchasing this machine in particular. One, the price is outstanding. Two, a much larger base for standing, and three, the adjustable weights. There are three different mhz levels, 25, 30 and 35. I've been pretty consistently using the 30mhz setting and find this very adequate for me. I've been using it every other day since purchase and find that my clothes are already looser and my muscles don't hurt as much and I have much more flexibility at my core. The larger base on this machine allows me to sit on it and stretch out my spine and legs with great ease. Sit ups are much more comfortable on this base as well. I am a massage therapist working with my chiropractor husband in our practice and we've both been very actively researching the benefits of Vibrational therapy (wave therapy) in our fields. Some of these machines range in the $20,000+ category without much difference than this $399.00 machine. We purchased this for our home to test it out before putting one in our practice. So far, as I've stated I have seen tremendous results. I am especially excited about my wrists and hands as well as my shoulders not hurting since I've been using the Proform Activator. My husband has a slight right knee issue and it has been very nicely resolved since using this machine. I would also like to mention that although we get much information sent to us on many vibrational products and their uses the most helpful information I found was on youtube. I just typed in Proform Activator and found some information and then typed in vibrational excercise, machine, etc.. and tons of very relevant information popped up. If you are researching these machines youtube is a good place to start. I will be purchasing another Proform Activator for my practice since I can't possibly give up the one I have now. It is stable and well built with a large enough base for almost all of our patients to get benefit from. The three speeds is a big plus and I forgot to mention that as well as the three speed settings there are also three different time settings...30, 45 and 60 second intervals. Very nice indeed.

Excellent Product

I ve had mine for about 3 months now and I must say that I doubt that [...] has written a legitimate review. I doubt seriously that he has ever used this machine. I have found that the vibration setting at 35 hz is almost overwhelming, so that part about having to stand in the middle is pure hogwash. I have found that it does exactly what it says it will do. I have worked out off/on for years with weights at Golds Gym. I must admit, when I tried it I was totally skeptical, but now I realize that this is not hype. In the high hz ranges the next day you actually have sore muscles that I would have to put in a hard hour or so workout at the gym to feel. I can feel myself and see myself starting to make substantial gains using the Activator. As far as the iFit, they only give you the demo and there are no other cards available yet. I called the company and they are expecting to release several iFit workout chips by the end of 2009 for the V7. Admittidly, I did buy mine at Costco, with their unlimited return policy for about $300 less, with free shipping. I am a very satisfied customer and have no plans on returning mine.
UPDATE: 9-22-09 I HAVE NOW BEEN USING THIS MACHINE FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS AND IT HAS WORKED BETTER THAN ANYTHING I COULD IMAGINE. I VE LOST 28 LBS AND CHANGED BY BODY COMPOSTION AND LOST 15% OF MY BODY FAT AND GAINED 9% MUSCLE. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE I AM ACTUALLY GETTING RIPPED AND DEFINED. I ONLY WORK OUT 20-30 MINUTES 3 TIMES A WEEK USING THE VIDEO THAT CAME WITH IT. ITS TOTALLY AMAZING TO ME THAT THE GENERAL EXERCISING PUBLIC DOSENT HAVE A CLUE THIS TECHNOLOGY EXISTS. THE RESULTS FROM USING THE PLATFORM
ARE INCREDIBLE AND I 'USED' TO SPEND 4-5 HOURS A WEEK IN GOLDS GYM AND NEVER HAVE I EVEN STARTED TO SEE THE RESULTS I VE MADE WITH THIS MACHINE. I DONT WORK FOR THE COMPANY OR ANYTHING ELSE, I AM JUST TOTALLY GLAD TO HAVE FINALLY FOUND A SYSTEM THAT ACTUALLY WORKS.

Rivals $2000.00 machines. Tri-planar motion.

Okay, first off I would like to say that it is very important to assemble this machine correctly. I have read some reviews on the web that some people are having issues with the machine being dead after putting it together. The reason why they are having this issue is that they are pinching the wire assembly at the bottom of the base and lower upright (neck) portion. It is very important not to pinch any of the wires or it will appear dead after assembling. If you put the machine together and it does not work afterward you pinched the wires somewhere and most likely where I mentioned.

This machine definitely rivals $2000.00 machines that I have tried. The base is bigger, it does not oscillate, which means it's a tri-planar vibration machine. Basically your cheapest machines oscillate and you're more expensive ones use tri-planar motion. In Basic English this machine is excellent for rehabilitation and weight control.

I have also heard people mention that you have to stand in the middle to feel anything. This is false information and the vibration is felt throughout the whole base. The different levels offer an excellent variety with this machine.

The quality of construction is top notch. The material used is tough and sturdy. It is easy to assemble if you have someone to help you and it's also manageable to assemble by yourself. Some people have complained that it is difficult to assemble and that the instructions are not clear. This is not true. The instructions are clear and if you read all the steps one at a time without skipping ahead you will find the instructions clear and concise. Most likely the people having issues assembling this machine are not mechanically inclined and they skipped reading each detail of construction.

Do yourself a favor and buy this machine. Total body vibration is awesome. I have had sciatic problems and this machine is helping tremendously for my pain.

A great workout!

We really enjoy the workout on this elliptical. The game feature is fun, however it does not "distract" you as much as you wish! The workouts are gym quality and you totally feel it the next day. The only complaint we have is that the heartrate monitor does not seem very accurate. I am not sure if there is a problem with the sensor or what, as this is not a show stopper for the actual workout. My goal is to do 30 mins/day and right now I am up to 25. Its very study and the stride is very smooth even though I am short and my other half very tall. We are both very glad that we purchased this model over the other ones and I can honestly say that I like working out on it.

this elliptical is very smooth and sturdy. a lot of them i tried were kind of wobbly. the stride is perfect to where you can extend your arms and legs to a comfortable level. i would recommend this product.

An issue, known by manufacturer but not handled before shipping causes problems

I had been so excited to have finally made this purchase. The set up went well, and that is the last thing that went well for weeks. Literally the second minute into the very first workout, a pre-set workout, while shifting resistance levels, the machine broke. I reportd this to the manufacturer immediately, receiving the snottiest "customer service" rep I've spoken to in a long time, and from there it took 3 weeks to get fixed. First they said I would have a service call completed in 48 business hours. In that time the service rep did call, to tell me that when the parts arrived I was to call him and he'd schedule. The parts were shipped to a wrong address, finally arrived and the service rep arrived. The parts were never used! Apparently there is a known issue with the unit shifting resistances, but no one told me until the service rep arrived. Now that the service rep has completed his work the unit seems to work fine, thankfully. I still have the parts in the unopend box should anything happen again. My emails to the manufacturer during this lenghty process went unanswered. The vendor from whom I purchased the unit refused to assist in this process. I will not ever buy from them again. What happened to standing behind your product?

Now that I can use the unit, the pre-set work outs seem to cover a broad variety so many could use the machine. I don't think the little games they have on the unit to encourage a more strenuous work out are of all that much value. I workout hard to begin with and catch up on news while doing so. Others may really enjoy them.

Proform trailrunner 2.0

Purchased the pro form trailrunner 2.0 Dec 28th. Looks great and functions appear that they would contribute to a good workout.

The treadmill has never functioned properly since we bought it. After 2 weeks the the authorized repair company was able to stop by for 5 minutes to confirm that the treadmill did not work. The repair company ordered the replacement parts, but the parts are backordered indefintely.

We've been going back and forth with ICON fitness and their customer service to have the unit returned because the parts are on indefinite backorder. Their customer service line averages right around a 45 minute wait time for anyone selecting the option to return equipment. I easily have 4+ hours of hold time with them. Buyer Beware with any ICON Fitness equipment. They are suppose to arranage the RMA at this time, 3 months later. Very disapointed.

Thought the touchscreen and size of the motor would have been a nice touch for $1500. Any kind of customer service or support probably would have resulted in us simply exchanging our broken treadmill for a new one. ICON Customer service is horrible. Sending it back and getting a non icon treadmill.

You won't be disappointed!

I love this treadmill. I run about 40 miles a week; I ran my old treadmill into the ground. I never realized how far treadmills have come in the last five years. The touch screen is super easy to use. The speed and incline increase/decrease with just a touch of your finger. So far I have just used the manual mode, however my teenage sons are asking to set up to the iFit live mode. I will set up an account this weekend. I am a 47 year old woman and really appreciate the wide/long tread to run on. And finally, it is so quiet, I can run and watch tv without the volume on high! If you are in the market for a treadmill, definitely check this one out, you won't be disappointed!

Many Years of Workouts to come!

I absolutely love this treadmill! I purchased it when it was on sale and feel like I got as good of a deal as one could ever hope for. It has ample power, a very good cushioning system ( my treadmill emits very few squeaks or noises), has a nice looking display and a very robust frame. It also has a pretty good warranty considering the price. This treadmill does a great job coalescing functionally with aesthetic appeal. I look forward to many more years of great workouts! Good, not great

This is my fourth treadmill over the past 25 years or so. I still have an older Proform which runs great except for the digital readout. I bought that one from Sears and maintained an extended warranty on it which came in handy since I have worn out a motor and two belts so far. This one was purchased to use at my parents' house for when I visit.

It is very quiet. The only noise is my feet hitting the belt and I only use it for walking, albeit at a brisk pace. I walk at least two miles a day and often more. The controls are simple and the motor is strong with a good warranty. Time will tell if it is needed. I had to adjust the tension on the belt quite a bit because it felt like it was slipping when it first was turned on.

The decking under the belt is not as cushioned as the older Proform I have at my house and the incline is barely noticeable. I constructed a backrest for my iPad, magazine or book which helps pass the time.

Set up was a breeze. The delivery man put it in the room where I planned to use it and all I had to do was cut open the box, lift up the main bars/console and hand tighten a large knob. Everything was pre-assembled so there was no questioning as to whether it was put together properly.

I would have given this four stars if the price were a little more reasonable but it is a decent treadmill for someone who doesn't want to go through the hassle of trying to assemble one themselves. I guess I paid for that ultimately.

Space conscious beware!

I was looking for a easily portable treadmill that was not too lacking in extra features (programs, incline, etc.) I have to say this came in much larger than expected and I wouldn't say it is easily portable. It still takes up a good amount of space when folded vertically (give yourself 3 ft. square) and to fold it flat takes more time than I would want to deal with on a daily per use basis. It does not roll easily on carpet so if you're planning to move it far, I would suggest keeping it in an area that isn't carpeted.

My main reason for purchasing this model was the small footprint I expected (and didn't receive). For the same price, I could have purchased a model with more bells and whistles than this model that also folds into the same space that this one does. To my knowledge there are only 2 treadmills out there that are truly "ultra compact" and this isn't one of them.

Good entry-level treadmill

This is probably one of the better treadmill's that you are going to find at this price range. In fact, the price is pretty good, as other sites have it for $100 more than what Amazon is offering it at (at least at the time of this review). I picked this one because of the Ipod speakers, the cushioning, and the 25 year motor warranty (Amazon says it's 7 years, but both Pro-Form's site and the instruction manual confirm it's 25 years). It's hard to find that kind of warranty at this price range (most you see will be only 5 years). It took about 1 1/2 hours to put together, and you will need two people to put the thing together. The toughest part is putting on the display/speaker unit on the top, as the screws were brutal to get in. A small electric screwdriver would be nice. The belt was already installed, and needed some minor adjusting.

The treadmill works well. It's not like running on a more expensive model, but there was minimal bounce when I was running on it. The locking mechanism holds the deck up well, but not perpendicular to the floor (it's at an angle).

Overall, not a bad treadmill. I hesitate to give it 5 stars only because I haven't owned it for too long. I will update this more when I have some more hours on the treadmill. By the way, the description mentions a different model (8.0Z?), but it was the Proform 490C that I received.

Update:

Some other thoughts on the treadmill after using it a bit more:

Speaker system for the Ipod is great. Plenty loud enough while exercising. Not much bass, but this is to be expected with such a small system.

Display - It's backlit, and provides info such as time elapsed, miles completed (such as 1.567 miles, etc.), laps completed (includes a display of a track as you complete each lap), current speed, and current incline.

Control panel - Has several nice features, including "quick speed" button where you can press the number MPH (such as 5MPH) and the treadmill will accelerate (or decelerate) to the selected speed directly. You can also input the speed at increments of .1 MPH at a time. I haven't used the incline as of yet, but it is adjustable through a panel button as well.

Exercise program - There is a "Weight Control Center" app that runs when selected via the Control panel. You enter your weight, calorie burn goal, and the appropriate program is selected for that goal. There are also a variety of other programs outside of the Weight Control Center that can be chosen as well, all with a variety of incline and speed.

Folding of deck - Really easy, doesn't fold completely flat, but supported well and does the job.

The item works good, low noise. However, buyer of this treadmill should know that the item is heavy (175 pounds), and it takes 2 people to set up. Or the buyer has to call Proform technician to set up the item with the cost of $169, if technician is available in the area.

Nice Machine

This is a really nice treadmill and we are pleased that we bought it. It is every bit as capable as a treadmill you might see at a gym. It's very sturdy and operates much more quietly than I expected. It is on the second floor of our house and I expected the noise to be inescapable. Nothing could be further from the truth. It goes plenty fast, offers more incline than I can currently use, lots of preset workouts, accurate heart monitoring, etc. Overall, its really great and a fair value at its price.

There are a few items / imperfections...
1. This thing is HEAVY. Seriously. You WILL need another person to move it around and getting it upstairs is a really really big deal. (to be fair, you wouldn't want it to be light-weight. This isn't really a negative... Just a warning. Treadmill. Heavy. 'nuff said.)

2. As for construction, setup was easy overall and everything went together in a confidence-inspiring way. There were 2 tiny issues but both are overcome with some patience.

First the control cord that runs up the right leg is pretty short. It is just long enough to get to the top of the leg, where it connects with its partner - which is inexplicably cartoonishly long. Seems like someone could have thought that bit through a little better. DO NOT throw away "the world's longest bread bag tie". You'll know what I mean when you see it. It's not trash and you'll need it to thread and hold the wires in place until you're done.

Second, the console attaches with a BUNCH of little screws and its tough to fit the console properly until they are set. Just work each of the screws a little and move on and so on until they are all tightened properly over the course of several passes. Ours looks tight but it would be easy to mess it up.

3. Be Aware: This thing does NOT have an iPod dock. It has a USB port and a mini-jack. To say that it is "iPod compatible" or whatever is advertised is a gross overstatement. Yes, the USB port will charge your iPod and yes, you can connect your iPod to the unit via the headphone jack and hear music from the speakers. Maybe I am being picky, but to me, "iPod Ready" should mean it has a physical dock for (hello?) an iPod. It's not very elegant such as it is and your iPod ends up just sitting there with wires sticking out of the top and bottom. Kind of ugly and I'm surprised that Apple is willing to logo the setup.

Good treadmill, mediocre Android tablet, motor start bug.

This well built midrange treadmill may be called the Trailrunner 4.0, and it may run Android 2.2, but the Internet portion feels like version 0.95 beta. In other words, it's a good midrange treadmill with a not-ready-for-prime-time tablet attached to it. I got the Proform as a Gold Box buy for what a comparable treadmill would cost without the Android add-on. The Sole F80 Sole F80 Treadmill (2011 Model) is a probably a better choice if it's less money. Certainly don't pay more for the iFit Live features at this point.

PEDIGREE - Proform is owned by ICON Health, a larger corporation, like GM, which brands a nearly identical treadmill under different brand names. This one is also sold under the NordicTrack brand name, and maybe others. Proform is probably the Chevy, and NordicTrack is probably the Buick :) I've used their equipment in gyms without issue. The idea of this model is to have an Internet connected treadmill with custom workouts and google map charted jogging paths.

SHIPPING - Fair - arrived 2 weeks after I ordered, and 7 days after Amazon estimated it would. The delivery men will drop it off past the threshold of your front door. I hope you have a strong back, a strong dolly, and perhaps some other moving tools...as with all well built treadmills, this one's a 400 lb beast. Inside, the treadmill and its parts arrived well packed, well protected, and in good condition. You'll need a big garbage can, and probably a box knife, to break down the packaging to fit in the trash.

ASSEMBLY - Fair - Getting the box off was a huge pain, though I think it would be for any treadmill by mail. The lower part of the treadmill is fully assembled; most of the work involves getting the control deck attached. Make sure you have two strong-backed people, a screwdriver, and a medium sized adjustable wrench. You will have to lift the 400lb treadmill at least three times during assembly. All the parts fit together pretty well, with pretty small tolerances. Kudos to Proform for good quality control on the mechanical parts. WARNING: If you live alone, are prone to hernias, or have ANY sort of muscle or joint problems, PAY FOR ASSEMBLY. You can't order assembly via Amazon, but the treadmill packaging does contain an offer to call in some people. Even if you're strong, there's a decidedly unsafe part of the process that involves installing the support strut while the gigantic treadmill is held free-hand over your head. Proform, if you're reading this, please consider pre-installing this strut at the factory. This last step is an accident waiting to happen, though I'm not sure if any other folding treadmill would be different.

BASIC OPERATION - very good - When you plug in the machine, it takes about 30 seconds to boot the Android operating system.

It plays a very well produced infomercial on how wonderful your new treadmill is. Plugging in the magnetic safety key shuts it up. (don't lose it, or you won't be able to use the treadmill)

BUILD QUALITY - very good

Build quality is well above average, and certainly competitive for its price range. The unit does not flex or vibrate very easily. It feels solid under your feet, but the thud-thud sound of your shoes isn't muted like it is on the $3,000 Precor machines. But for a folding treadmill in this price class, it's darned good.

The motor is reasonably quiet, and the 3.8hp rating is higher than most at this price. Treadmill belt has good traction. The belt has slightly rough edges, which don't affect performance, but also don't compare well against more expensive machines. Rollers are larger than average, which should increase longevity. There's adjustable cushioning. My gimpy knees did fine on a light 30 minute run.

Large one touch buttons for speed and incline allow quick adjustments. Inexplicably, they do not work unless you are already running. On other treadmill models, such as Horizon, AFG, and even lower end proform models, these same buttons work at any time; you can hit the 5mph button from a stop and immediately start running.

The big 10" touchscreen is great for basic operation: Tap go, and a very nice display lets you run in manual mode. The touchscreen controls work great in the basic running modes, where the buttons are large and easy to read. The information displays are top notch, though I wish they had a way to cycle through screens automatically. The display is big, bright and easy to read. If you are 5'10 like me, viewing angles are great. If you are 5'2" like my wife, the screen washes out. Proform obviously opted for a cheaper TN panel, rather than the wider angle IPS panel on the iPAD and other nicer tablets.

Unlike most Android phones and tablets, the screen does not appear to cycle off to save power. The off switch is inconveniently located at the bottom front of the treadmill. (for safety reasons, I don't think ANY treadmill has a convenient power switch)

Sound quality of the built in speakers is fair, fitting somewhere between a good laptop and a bad boombox. You're not going to rock the house with these, but more than acceptable while jogging. There is an easy to use 3.5mm "aux-in" and an included cable to plug in any mp3 player. The stickers say "iPod compatible", but this aux-in is not as well integrated as other treadmills which include the proprietary Apple dock connector and integrated music controls. (I bet that incurs a hefty Apple licensing fee, which is why it isn't here) Besides, Apple changes their docking plugs every year, anyway.

ADVANCED OPERATION - Poor - Frustrating, especially since the problems are easy to fix.

Speaking of Apple, I hate their corporate culture, and I refuse to buy their products. However, they didn't sell a zillion iPads and iPhones making bad product. A two year old can figure out an iPad, and millions of non-tech people happily consume iPhones. You don't need manuals to run most Apple products to most of their potential. I should also say that I'm an Android fanatic, and that had a part in my choosing this treadmill. I have the original Motorola Droid, and I have it customized and hacked to it's utmost. So I'm no stranger to electronics.

There's no way on earth a non-technical user would ever figure this machine out. Basic menus are too basic, and configuration is difficult to find. There's no initial setup wizard. The product manual could be written better; it seems to expect you to jump to page 27 for this, then remember to come back to page 4 for that. Again, from a product design perspective, well designed products should not require the manual for at least 80% of their functionality...and most other treadmills succeed in this regard. Setting up wireless was relatively simple...once I found it...and once I managed to get my fricking password typed in.

This exposes you to the single greatest failure of the product: the lousy resistive touchscreen. Typing is aggravatingly inaccurate, even with the treadmill at 0mph. The letters are gigantic compared to a phone, but nowhere near as precise. You either press one letter lightly and get the next letter over, or you can push hard and get the correct letter twice. The delete button works about one fourth of the time. Unlike what the paid shill reviewers have said, pushing hard or soft doesn't improve the accuracy. It took me an eternity to enter a 14 character wireless password. Registering for the iLive account (which requires entering a 16 digit alphanumeric code) was even more frustrating. Do yourself a favor and register the iFit account on the website using your desktop or laptop. Pick a short username and password, because you still have to put it into the treadmill at least once.

Proform's manual says to calibrate the touchscreen. I did manage to find the two separate calibrator programs. The first is relatively easy to find in the configuration menu. The second is on the Android desktop in the app drawer to the right. No way a non-techie person would find these. The improvement was marginal; it's still far worse than any phone or tablet I've used so far. Leagues away from the standard that non-technical people have come to expect from the capacitive touchscreens in iPhones, iPads, and pretty much all recent smartphones. You can make it tolerable by using a pencil eraser instead of your finger. For your safety, I would only use the eraser head of an unsharpened pencil, and even then, only when the treadmill is parked.

BROWSER - Poor

Even after I updated the firmware (which has warnings about known bugs) and calibrated the touchscreen (both of which are tricky to find), the browsing experience is simply does not live up to Proform's video hype.

As previously mentioned, the resistive touchscreen is pitifully poor. Entering web addresses is frustrating and inaccurate. Multi-touch pinch to zoom is not supported, meaning that this could be a lower cost resistive touchscreen. Half the time when you are trying to scroll, it clicks links instead. The stock Android browser isn't as fast as your modern 1GHz smartphone or tablet. There is no apparent way to create your own custom bookmarks, though the Android browser does auto-remember your history. Android fanatics, you'll probably recognize the browser as the stock 2.2 browser. Because Icon cheaped out and put in a resistive touchscren, pinch to zoom doesn't work, nor does scrolling about a fourth of the time. Just frustrating, especially since spending $20-50 more for a quality capacitive touchscreen overlay is all it would take to make this a much better product. Shame on you, Icon Health, especially since this product debuted with a $3,000 MSRP, and sells for $1700 street. If this wasn't attached to the treadmill, this would be equivalent to the chintzy $150 tablet at KMart.

You can make everything better with a touchscreen stylus, (or the aforementioned pencil eraser) but I have some safety concerns about using anything but your fingers on a moving treadmill.

You can access the browser from almost any screen, but realistically, it's only marginally safe to use it at the minimum speed of 1 mph. Don't even try to use this finicky beast while walking fast, let alone jogging or running. Youtube and Dailymotion are pre-bookmarked, but it's not really practical to watch videos while exercising. Video quality is the Android default 320p, which is to say grainy and barely watchable. If you're always on wifi, shouldn't you make it default to at least 480p quality?

Facebook is bookmarked. Even if you manage to get your password in correctly, you still will have a hard time simply scrolling up and down the touch version of the facebook site. Nothing to do with Facebook, everything to do with the lousy touchscreen. Good luck posting unless the treadmill is parked. If you are so hard up on internet devices, that you need this treadmill for Facebook, buy a cheaper treadmill and a Nook Color for $250. You'll be much happier.

Yahoo music is included, but as soon as you switch back to the treadmill display, the music cuts off.

Android's stock launcher screen is hidden from normal view, though you can find it under "Anroid Desktop" in the configuration menus. There is no way to install Android apps, as Android Market is missing. I haven't tried the developer's sidedoor (ADB) to install apps, but frankly, playing Angry Birds while jogging probably isn't a good idea, anyway.

CUSTOM WORKOUTS WITH GOOGLE MAPS - Fair

This is the feature that really got my attention in the promo videos. Set up your run on google maps, and it will provide incline and street view photographs as you go.

When you try to download an iFit workout, it just sits at 0% forever, or says "no workouts available." Turns out you have to set them up on the web browser (do yourself a solid and set it up on your laptop), then download those workouts from the treadmill. (suggestion to Proform: when you create your custom workouts, and it should "push" to the treadmill automatically) Creating a custom map route isn't difficult on the desktop, once you figure it out. Don't even try to set up anything on the treadmill browser; the drunken touchscreen is too frustrating.

This is NOT an intuitive process. You have to log in to the iFit Live website (preferably on your laptop) and create your route there. There are some interesting pre-set routes there. Drawing a custom route isn't too hard, just click on point A, point B (and more if necessary) to make your route. Once you've added them to your schedule (kind of like a Netflix queue), you have to go back to the treadmill, click on iFit Live, and click to download them to the treadmill. Of note, you MUST run the first route on your schedule no matter what; you cannot choose from your routes on the treadmill. The workaround is to arrange the order on the website before you go on the treadmill to download them. Proform, this could be improved without making the product more expensive.

Just as promised, you can look at a google map or better, yet, streetview photographs as you're running. The photographs refresh about every 5-10 seconds. Image quality could be better, and you can't pan and scan around. (not that you probably should while running). It's better than staring at red LED dots, but it's not nearly as crystal clear as Streetview appears on your PC or Mac.

CUSTOM WORKOUT PLANS - Fair

You can download these from the iFit website. Just like the Google maps routes, you queue them up on the website, then walk over to the treadmill and download them. Also like the map routes, you can only run the first one in the queue. As an added bonus, the voice of Jillian Michaels narrates along every minute or so. (volume buttons are easy to reach if you aren't a Biggest Loser fan). She seems to be more peppy than angry, but may that's because I weigh less than the treadmill's 350lb maximum capacity. What's also unclear is how much iFitLive will cost after the one year membership is over, and what features disappear if you decide not to renew it.

HEART RATE MONITOR - Fair

Don't bother; it's so erratic, I didn't bother checking it against my Polar strap. Moist hands do help with these contact sensors. It does not have a wireless sensor for heart rate monitors. (that's in the $2,000 treadmill club) There aren't any heart rate control programs on the treadmill, anyway. To be fair, most contact sensors don't work well for me, either...heart rate straps are still the most accurate way. (outside of EKGs)

OVERALL RATING - Good, but just barely

Decent treadmill overall if it goes on sale. Otherwise, consider comparable models for less money without the Android browser, and buy yourself a nook color or iPad with the difference. Or if you're feeling lucky, use it with a touchscreen stylus.

SUGGESTIONS FOR ICON HEALTH/ PROFORM:
Spend some extra dimes on a capacitive touchscreen, and give it a panel with wider viewing angles for short people.
Make the workouts selectable from the machine.
Make the product easier to use.
Clearly label the advanced menu icons in the lower right.
Put the support strut in at the factory.
Make the product less expensive, as is the treadmill is probably a decent value for $1300, and a winner at $1100. It's a fair deal at $1700, and a "Biggest Loser" at the original $3000 MSRP.

ADDENDUM 02-19-2011:

TECH SUPPORT:
I appear to be one of the lucky ones, as my machine pretty much worked out of the box, with a little tweaking. So I didn't have to call tech support. I really doubt that Pro-Form is set up to support the Android part of the product, and I doubt iFit is set up to support a treadmill. I don't have any confidence in tech support from ANYONE I've purchased a consumer product from, and given they couldn't design it right, I doubt that they can support it right, either.

GETTING STARTED:
A couple of tips if you decide to get this, which will make the treadmill work a bit better.
When you first get it, tap the little button in the lower right, and then tap the wireless network setup.
After you get wifi working (hopefully), click the little button in the lower right twice to get into the hardware config menu.
Run the firmware update. It took me a couple of tries for it to connect successfully, could be a slow server.
Reboot Android. (or just turn the whole machine off and on)
Run the screen calibrator, using a rubber eraser head of a pencil
Go to the Android Desktop, tap the menu on the very right edge of the screen. When the programs pop out, pick the Screen Calibrator and run that one, too.
Calibrate the incline.
Does this sound user friendly? NO!

TREADMILL STALLING BUG:

Very often, you hit Start to run a program, and the treadmill motor doesn't start. Actually, it almost NEVER starts, not with the programs, and not on the manual mode. You have to hit the big red STOP button, then tap RESUME on the screen, and THEN starts to go. The quick set incline and speed buttons will not work unless the motor is running. The first time it happened, I shrugged it off. But now that it happens every time, I'm starting to get pissed. Not quite enough to take it apart and return it, but getting really close.

YAHOO MUSIC:

It's an entertaining diversion, but as mentioned before, once you enter the browser (I do it with my feet parked on the sides), you cannot return to the the treadmill software without cutting off the music. Thankfully, the speed and incline buttons still work in the web browser mode. Also, the buttons to change stations don't work reliably. It seems like they tried to implement flash on the music site, and Android can't really do flash with a bottom-of-the-barrel-CPU. Heck, you can't scroll up and down without the music cutting and stalling. I think you're better off starting Pandora on your smartphone and plugging it into the aux-in jack (which does work as it should), or an mp3 player.

POWER SWITCH:
After using it every time for a week, it's starting to get annoying. The switch feels really cheap and flimsy, and I'm afraid that it won't last. I'm probably going to go pick up a surge protector with its own on off floor switch.

REVISED OVERALL RATING: 2 Stars....I'm sorry, but I'm starting to feel I overpaid for this. The treadmill is good, but I really wish I had listened to everyone else and bought a Sole or Horizon machine instead. My wife still likes it; she just hits the basic presets and starts running. As soon as you use it beyond the most basic treadmill functionality, you'll start to get frustrated. As I said, it's a four star treadmill bolted to a one star control panel.

I would be reluctant to recommend this product to anyone without serious computer know how...and nerdy people don't always have the strong backs required to assemble it. If you can get it for around $1,000, and only use the basic presets, you'll be happy. You can do that easily...by buying a different treadmill.

Phenomenal ... A Must-Have ...

Yes, I see all the one-star reviews. Therefore, I plan to update this post frequently. While the ProForm may be running flawlessly today, it may flatline tomorrow. So, know that I am here to be objective and to help anyone thinking about buying this product (see my other reviews and know that I am a very frank reviewer). As of today, here is my experience (down to the delivery!):

-Delivery: A nightmare. The treadmill was shipped via Home Delivery. They were late for their first delivery (scheduled for "sometime between 7:00AM and 11:00 AM") and thus missed us (we both teach at a university and cannot skip a class because of a late delivery). Now, I informed them that they we teach and could not wait after 11:00AM, I guess they thought we were not serious. When I called to reschedule, the delivery company was rude and redirected me to a Home Direct representative. When the Home Direct rep called the delivery people, they hung up on her twice. Good god. They rescheduled for days later (this time between 1:00PM and 5:00PM ... they showed up around 5:45PM and we had to cancel our dinner reservations). The delivery men were incensed that the treadmill was for a second floor work-out room ... and though they got it upstairs (with the assistance of my significant other), they plopped it in the hallway: all 350 pounds of it. Needless to say, moving it was an epic chore. Maybe your experience will be better, but I would rank it as equal to dealing with the "cable company." And, though you would think that ordering this expensive machine would earn one some "white glove treatment," the fact of the matter is they they regarded us with disdain (as though we were causing them undue aggravation). Exhausting.

-Assembly: While it has very few pieces to assemble, the sheer strength required is daunting. This thing is a bear!!!! Though it took us no more than ninety-minutes to put it together, they were a hard-fought ninety. My earnest opinion is that ProForm made this as easy as possible for the customer (by having as few pieces as humanly possible). It is a massive, massive machine and it requires some physical effort to assemble it. (Read: this is a two-person job -- AT LEAST!!) The good news? There was not one single "glitch" or error ... the treadmill was brought online and fully functional on the first try. Simple as that. Nice, right? (Follow all directions to the letter and you should experience similarly positive results.)

-Operations: The belt is wide. This is very much welcome in comparison to some of the narrower belts we have experienced -- it's a bit more luxurious. The ProForm experience is very smooth and it absorbs shock well. My better-half was at a full-run for a sustained period had no issues with shock. Likewise, we were both surprised at how quiet the motor is! We have all used "loud" treadmills in the gym, but this one is much more quiet than ever expected. (When I am in the hallway with the door closed, I cannot even hear it! Ditto for when I am downstairs beneath it.) It has up to a 15% incline (6% is as high as I have ventured thus far ... and that alone was smooth and challenging). It runs up to twelve m.p.h. (I have only taken it to seven ... that was also very smooth and challenging). Now, I am having a little difficulty getting a consistent reading with the heart monitor. Currently, it is jumping all over! I have a feeling with a little more practice and reading, I will understand what I'm doing wrong. (I will update this once I figure out if it is my fault or an innate inconsistency with the machine. Right now, I assume it is my fault). Additionally, the touch-screen seems a little hinky right now (nothing like the sensitivity or the accuracy of the iPod Touch.) It seems I have to touch a little below each character ... I'm going to see if I can adjust the alignment a bit. (I will report back with my results). Even still, it does work!

-iPod feature: It would have been optimal to have a little dock on the front (maybe where the book-rest is), but that it exists at all is pretty neat. Basically, you plug the iPod into the side of the console and set it in the cup-holder area (There are two cup-holders, so it's not taking up the only designated space for one's water-bottle. No worries there!). It plays through the console-speakers (which are "nice-enough").

-iFit feature: The treadmill comes with a free, one-year subscription to iFit. In the stack of paperwork, you will find an iFit flier -- don't toss it! It has your membership code on it. It am still tinkering with all the exciting aspects of this option, but here's what I've accomplished so far. It was raining today, so I plotted my usual route on iFit.com. Then, I went over to the treadmill. It was there! And, with Google Earth, I could literally see what I usually see out for my daily run ... the tree-lined roads, the dry-cleaner, the bagel-shoppe, everything! One can see it from an aerial-view or from a first-person perspective. Very cool. Additionally, one can choose what regimen works best for one's goals. There is 1.) weight loss, 2.) get fit, 3.) power walking. and 4.) performance. The work-outs are progressive and customized to the needs you select. Oh, did I mention that you can choose Jillian Michaels as your trainer?! (Love her!) I have completed two of the work-outs so far ... they are exactly challenging enough! Both had great, effective cool-downs! (There will be more to come as I experiment with this feature!)

Thus far, the Pro-Form is an amazing machine -- and, now I cannot picture my life without it. One can make these work-outs intense and the machine can handle it! The web-features and the iFit program are an absolute boon. Thus far, my experience has been wholly positive (especially as I move farther from the delivery fiasco). I will report back here often I discover new features, make adjustments, or experience problems. Good luck in your search for the perfect treadmill (though, this may very well be exactly that!!)

The Mercedes Benz of Treadmills, Best Looking, Best Performing, But... Well Read On

Did I have some problems? Yes. Do I love this treadmill way better than my Health Rider? Yes. First the good. This thing has got to be the most beautiful, huge, and impressive treadmill I have ever seen. There are some that are this big in the fitness centers, but none so ergonomically designed. Even the pictures don't do it any justice. It is the only treadmill with a built in computer that allows you to surf the web (other than one made by the same company under another brand name). With so much in the way of TV content streaming over the web these days, Hulu etc., you can catch up on all of your favorite shows too. The motor is one of the most powerful at 3.8hp. You can tour the world via Google Maps; run the hills of Italy. It is very smooth and quiet, and you can even adjust the padding level on the belt. There are too many other great features to list; you can see them in the description. Now onto what everyone really wants to know about; how to deal with the bugs. Bugs are only a problem if you can't fix them. If something is easy to fix or correct, then it is no longer a problem. These come with a 5 year parts warranty, and a 2 year labor warranty, plenty of time to get the bugs out, and the nature of the problems are bugs, not defective merchandise.

Ok so onto the fixes. I did a lot of research before posting this review so I know every possible problem this machine can have and how to fix it... well sort of. :-) Anyhow, here is the list of bugs.
1) Do an update as soon as you get the machine. It downloads online. It takes hours. If you unplug the machine or interrupt the update you have problems.
2) Motor; wire can come loose while shipping. Just reconnect.
3) If your console is knocked around while shipping they will replace it.
4) Do not use the incline for the first 20 hours. Just use it flat and let it break in because the lubrication takes 20 hours to work in.
5) Won't turn on. When installing be sure not to pinch the console main wiring harness. Also the harness underneath the console that houses the computer/screen has 3 snap together connectors. There are only about 6 Phillips head screws holding that console down, remove them, tip the console up, and check the plugs. You may even want to unplug, and replug them back in, and then rest the console back down, and try it again. That happened to mine.
6) Any treadmill requires maintenance. For example the back of the belts will go right or left. There are two bolts on the back with allen wrenches. Adjust them to center the belt. (Loosening them will pull it closer) If belt is too tight it will make the belt stop. Someone over 350 pounds could shut the machine down if not properly adjusted. Loosen the belt. Set loose as possible without slipping. If you hear a weird noise it is too loose. You could also do a fine tweaking after the break in period for optimal performance. If you get on the treadmill at any weight, and the belt stops moving once you get on it, an adjustment, and/or lubrication is required.
7) Lubricate the belt once per year, and get the lube from Pro Form over phone, or ICON. It is a non-Teflon waxy base. When first using machine from factory, or when freshly lubricating protect surfaces such as carpets underneath with plastic. They do sell mats if you want one of theirs. I just used some clear plastic that I bought at Home Depot and trimmed it neat so you don't really see it.
7) Protect it from lightning spikes with a surge suppressor.
8) Use a dedicated circuit or if it is on a shared line make sure the other outlets on the same line are not being used at the same time.

I understand that ideally this would be a plug and play device, instead of a plug and pray device. Be that as it may, the problems that can occur are correctible, and with a five year parts warranty, even if the whole computer/brain/console goes bad, they can ship you a new one; it only takes about 6 screws, and 3 snap in connectors for the wiring, and about 5 minutes of time to swap out a new one.

Improvements I would suggest to ProForm are either making a viewing screen adjustable to accommodate people of different heights, or a screen that doesn't have angle viewing challenges, or both. If you are 5'0" the screen angle is a real challenge. It is ideally pitched for someone that is about 6 foot. Also the inside backing plate of the console has an HDMI space for a plug; I would suggest they integrate that so you can view it on your HDTV instead. I understand that would require a high end video card which would increase the price somewhat, but maybe that could become an option?

Finally this thing is a monster to ship so if the shipping company abuses it, and the box is torn up, take pictures and contact Pro Form right away. With the photos they send you out replacement parts right away, and handle the shipping claim themselves. I found them to be an ideal company to work with, and received excellent customer support right over the phone. No trouble getting a service rep to spend some time with me.

So with all of the problems that happen to this unit listed above, and the work arounds, including getting free replacement parts, I guess it all comes down to, do you want the most advanced beautifully built treadmill, or one that doesn't require getting over some mostly shipping jarring connections type of problems, that are relatively easy to fix. If you don't want to deal with it, they also have a two year labor warranty, and they will send someone out. Of course they run you through some quick fixes over the phone first. All in all I am totally in love with the machine. After a console issue that got resolved it works first time, every time without a glitch. When you think of it this is typical with cars. They give you a warranty, and after working out a couple of bugs it's pretty smooth sailing after that. The bottom line for me is this is the top of treadmills both in ease of use, beauty, ergonomics, speed, quietness, and the only one with web-integration which takes the whole experience to another level. It's worth a tweak or two. I love it.

Enjoying my treadmill

In the interests of full disclosure, I received this item through Amazon Vine. However, I try extremely hard to write my reviews as if I had paid the full purchase price, for I think this is only fair for those who read and rely on reviews.

===Before the Treadmill Arrives===

First off, you're going to need a few things handy before you begin to assemble your treadmill. Although the majority of tools needed are included, you will need to have a Phillips screwdriver, an adjustable wrench, and scissors. In order to run your treadmill, you'll need a single outlet surge suppressor (I'd recommend buying one on Amazon so you don't end up running all over town to find one like I did). The surge suppressor must have a UL suppressed voltage rating of 400 volts or less and a minimum surge dissipation of 450 joules. The surge suppressor should be rated for 120 volts AC and 15 amps. I paid $12 for mine at Radio Shack, but you can find cheaper ones on Amazon. Finally, this treadmill is a heavy machine and I would strongly recommend some sort of mat to place under it to protect your hardwood floor or carpet. I already had some interlocking padded mats and ended up using those (which work well), but I know there are pads specifically made for treadmills that might be even better.

===Delivery===

I was pleased that the shipping service used made it very clear when the treadmill was to arrive. I received two automated messages telling me when it was scheduled to arrive (and to press 1 if that was acceptable), and I had a real person call the day before the delivery to confirm. The woman who called told me it was the delivery policy to have the treadmill be delivered inside your front door (so for those of you in apartments, they should bring it up to your unit). The box was huge, which is to be expected given that this is a very large and very heavy machine. I live on the second floor of an apartment building and the poor delivery men had quite a time getting the box up the stairs.

===Assembly===

Now the part that everyone dreads - putting the darn thing together. I can't stress enough that this thing is heavy - the delivery guys said it was listed at 300 lbs. but "felt much, much heavier." This means you're going to need to have at least one other person help you move it to your desired location (I had two friends help me). Putting the treadmill together was, all things considered, not too bad. The instructions are fairly detailed and they include helpful illustrations next to each step so that you know what you're doing. I only have two complaints regarding the assembly process.

First, there are a lot of screws and they're fairly similar in size, which makes them a bit of a pain to sort out (though quite doable). Second, Pro-form included an insert that added an additional step that had been excluded from the manual. It's a fairly important step - calibrating the incline so that the safety bar can be attached properly - so be sure to keep an eye out for that. Speaking of the safety bar, the treadmill does fold up, but it does not fold up completely and it will stick out at an angle.

I had my two friends help me and we were able to have the treadmill assembled in less than two hours (and this was at a very leisurely pace). Like moving the box, you'll need at least one other person to help you assemble the treadmill. Unlike another reviewer, I was lucky enough to have no missing or damaged parts, so the treadmill went together without a hitch. Therefore, I have not had the pleasure (ha!) of dealing with Pro-form customer service, so I can't comment on that. However, I did visit their Facebook page and saw that they had one representative posting that was very helpful regarding problems, so perhaps that would be an option. Also, I am aware that while my treadmill may be running perfectly now, the real question is one of durability. I will update this review if I run into any problems.

===Features===

Now the fun part - describing the actual treadmill. This treadmill has a lot of really cool features that help justify the price tag. First, you can change the speed in increments of .1 mph up to a maximum speed of 12 mph. As I am solely a walker myself (to save my downstairs neighbor's sanity and to also protect my fickle knees), I use it mostly at slower speeds and use the incline to boost the intensity. The incline feature changes the incline from 0% up to 15%. There are several modes that allow you to change the workout information displayed (shown on the console's seven-inch touchscreen display). You can see your elapsed time, calories burned, distance traveled, incline level, speed, a ¼ mile track that shows you the time it takes to complete one lap and the number of laps completed, time remaining, calories burned per hour, vertical feet climbed, your pace in mph, or your heart rate. You can measure your heart rate using the handgrip pulse sensors, though I don't think they are terribly accurate. I prefer to use a heart rate monitor and I am a bit disappointed that the treadmill doesn't sync with my heart rate monitor, but it's certainly not a deal breaker for me.

The console includes a fan that has three levels, though the fan is honestly pretty weak. Don't rely on it as your only source of air; I prefer to use a little Vornado that I aim right at me! The console also includes built-in speakers. These are not Bose-quality speakers, but I think they're fairly good for their small size. The console has an audio jack and includes an audio wire that you can use to plug into a jack on your mp3 player, CD player, etc. There are volume buttons on the console itself, so you're not constantly fumbling for the volume on your iPod.

Now my favorite part! This treadmill has wireless capabilities (a snap to connect to my wifi network, I might add), so you can download and use your included one-year iFit membership. While I think the iFit service and site are a bit clunky, this is iFit's fault and not the fault of the treadmill.

For example, you arrange your workout schedule on the iFit site and the next workout on your list is downloaded when you start your iFit workout. As of yet, there is no way to choose another iFit workout from the treadmill console if you don't feel like doing the next workout on your list. You have to sign in online and rearrange your workouts so that the one you want is on top, which is kind of annoying. However, other than that I love, love, love the iFit workouts. They have several pre-programmed workouts you can choose from (Central Park, etc.), and you can also make your own using Google Maps, which I think is an awesome feature (I'm currently "hiking" the Inca trail to Machu Picchu!). They also have competitions, trainer workouts and many more features. Check out their site it you want to know more.

Of course, if you don't want to use an iFit workout, you certainly don't have to. You can use your treadmill the normal way by selecting speed and incline, you can select one of the workout settings the treadmill offers (calorie-burn workouts, all-terrain workouts), or you can select a set-a-goal workout, which allows you to set a time, distance or calorie goal.

===Overall===

I've only had my treadmill set up a few days and all seems to be working well so far. I'll certainly update if I have problems in the future.

The bottom line is that I think this is an excellent treadmill for the price. The features available on this treadmill make it a joy to use, and I find myself actually looking forward to my next walk.

I am still enjoying my treadmill immensely! It's been about five months since I received it and I use it, at minimum, three times a week. I've recently been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and am trying very hard to keep exercising as I was before - this treadmill allows me to do so, no matter what the time or the weather. I only had a problem once (the incline was off and not changing); recalibrating the incline was a simple procedure and fixed the problem. I look forward to many more months on the machine and will update if any problems arise! Happy treading!

Great Treadmill- A starting point for new technology treadmills

I am the type that does a lot of research prior to big-ticket purchases. My last treadmill was a Reebok that lasted about 3 years before the belt started slipping. I knew I wanted to get something much sturdier, and with some of the newer technologies built in, all around the $1000 price point.

Enter the Proform Power 1080- First of all, this treadmill is sturdy. I weigh 220 and run on this thing and it feels rock solid. My Reebok treadmill used to shake the console a bit when I ran, this one does not move. The frame appears to be a much heavier duty than your standard home treadmill, and it is apparent in the size and weight of this unit. Contrary to some of the other reviews, I did not have that much issue getting it together. I spent roughly an hour and a half putting it together at a slow pace. The only time that it would have helped to have had a second person assembling is the very last step, which was installing the deck lowering hydraulics. I managed to do it by myself, but would recommend doing this with a second helper. Other than that, everything went together as expected, with instructions that were pretty good, but nothing to write home about. As other have mentioned, assemble this where you want it to stay, it is big and heavy and once in place, I would not want to be moving it through doorways and up stairs.

Treadmill features- This treadmill is on the forefront of some of the newer features that are coming out, including the wider and longer belts, which I do find to be very helpful (I always felt like I was about to go off the end of my Reebok treadmill if I slowed down the least little bit), bulkier frame construction, longer warranties, and of course, the increased use of electronics. The console includes a fan, which I find is almost a waste of time and space, as it is very small and did not seem to do a whole lot for me. I ended up placing a small fan in front of the treadmill for a decent breeze. The speakers are pretty good for their size and can blast out a respectable amount of volume while maintaining decent sound quality, and can be easily heard over the motor and belt while running. I still prefer to wear headphones when I use it though. The controls are positive and easy to use for quick incline and speed adjustments. The heart-rate monitor leaves a lot to be desired, which is my opinion on most hand-grip heart-rate monitors. I'm sorry, but I just don't want to stand on the side rails for 30 seconds to get my HR information, it throws my workout off. It is amazing to me that Proform and some of the other manufacturers do not place some sort of wireless HR device in these units. I would gladly pay an extra $50 for a HR strap to get an accurate reading all throughout my workout. As a side note, Proform does not have the accessory unit for this purpose for this treadmill (the Accu-rate wirless HR monitor). You would think with a wifi connection and a USB port, adding a bluetooth HR monitor would be no big deal (hint, hint 3rd party companies).

Technology Package- The 7" touchscreen is gorgeous and responsive to touch. When reviewing between this treadmill and the 1450 with the 10" screen, I was worried about the bad reviews about the touchscreen being terrible and unresponsive. I do not find that to be the case on this 7". One downfall on this treadmill is the incredibly long boot-up time of the console. Upon flipping the power switch, it take between 30 seconds to 1 minute for the unit to boot up and be usable. While doing this, it goes back and forth between black screens. At first, I thought I had a DOA unit, be patient! This becomes more of a drag as the instructions clearly tell you to turn off the switch and unplug the unit after use to avoid pre-mature wearing of the electronic components. I did find that if you simply leave the unit on, and remove the key, it goes into a sleep mode that recovers in a few seconds when the key is reinstalled. I am still debating whether or not to continue this practice. The built in wifi works amazingly smooth, and I was connected to my wifi in a few seconds, with no tendency to drop the signal yet. Upon linking to your network, you download and install a firmware update that was pretty self-explanatory and took about 10 minutes. When actually using the treadmill during a workout, the screen displays various information in a very easy to follow and entertaining way. You can see a graphic display of the lap, elevation and speed graphs, countdown timers, and depending on the mode, a terrain or satellite map of the path. Unlike the 10" models, there is no Google streetview on these 7" screens.

I-Fit- The built in Ifit software is pretty cool, although I would not say it is ready for prime-time yet nor is it worth the $120 per year they are asking, but just right for the 1 year free trial that comes with the purchase. With Ifit, I was able to set up an account for my wife and myself on the computer. When I came back to the treadmill, it welcomed me with my name and asked which one of us would be working out. Very simple. On the ifit.com site, I was able to download a half-marathon training program for myself and a different workout schedule for my wife. It keeps track of my workout, and the next time I get on the treadmill, it knows to progress me to the next training program. It's very user friendly and really helps change the pace up each day. You can also use their google maps feature to draw out a course anywhere, and then load the map and elevation data onto the treadmill as a workout. I mapped out a particular run I did in the hills of Pennsylvania and it was pretty cool to watch my little runner icon move around the satellite map, and right where I remember a killer hill, sure enough the incline jacked up to 11%. Apparently, you can also do race competitions, although I have yet to try it. All in, Ifit is a pretty cool program with some entertaining features and a nice mix of workout programs. I will not pay $120 a year for this service though, as I cannot see the value. I am waiting until more people get into this technology, as I imagine this would be a very easy program to emulate with freeware/mobile apps.

Overall, I find this to be a very good treadmill in the $1000 price point. The machine itself is solid, it has a terrific warranty, and the electronics/technology package are where treadmills will be going in the near future. This equipment marries together the fitness and entertainment aspects quite well. Some aspects that I have loved to see in this equipment would have been a browser to be able to access things like Hulu or Netflix in the event that I wanted to watch a program over my wifi, and they are starting to get into this with the 10" Android models, but apparently have some bugs to work out, and the option for wireless HR readings.

Dont buy from Proform

This is my second purchase from Proform.com with my first being 6 years ago. The company has changed for the worst. When my machine arrived the wielding was off and the fold up storage latch was an inch too long. I called the 1-800 number for several days and was on hold for hours. No one answered or called back from the answering service. Five days later I recieved an e-mail telling me to call the 800 number again!!!This company is horrible. I will never buy a product from them again and I warn everyone else to do the same.

I just had another baby and was in the market for an affordable elliptical that would fit our (crowded) home. I was torn between the Proform 590E and a comparable machine. After researching and reading a ton of reviews I decided to purchase the Proform and I couldn't be happier with my decision. It looks great and is incredibly quiet and offers a smooth elliptical motion. One of the arms is a bit wobbly, but that could be due to assembly - otherwise it's very sturdy. Delivery was as promised and the driver placed the box in our garage. It took my husband and a friend of his about two hours to assemble, but they said directions were clear and it was easier than they anticipated. Very happy with our purchase and with Amazon!

Quiet, stable, makes you want to excercise

I compared three different Elliptical Trainers (Schwinn, Sole, and ProForm) and settled on this one. I became interested in Ellipticals because of my knee problems. Ellipticals pedals revolve along an elliptical path making each stride uniform and thus easier on the knees. I tried a few different ellipticals and noticed that not all ellipticals have the same elliptical path - some are more round (similar to peddling a bicycle) and some are more elongated (similar to skiing motion). The stance also differed somewhat. I read that the narrow pedal position is more ergonomic, but I felt more comfortable with pedals wide apart because I was more balanced. ProForm felt the most comfortable and Consumer Reports ranked ProForm fairly high in their report as well.

Set-up:
Elliptical trainer requires a space similar to a love seat coach. I also needed to have a little extra room around it for safe dismount. My original thought of placing the trainer in the corner of the basement did not work because elliptical also needs vertical space, as the machine elevates you.
The elliptical trainer is heavy. On my own I could not even budge it. Delivery people left the unit near the entrance. I hired someone to set it up for $120.

Overall, I am pleased with the Proform Elliptical. It is quiet, stable, I am comfortable on it, and I like the little fan that blows cool air into my face. But most importantly it makes me want to exercise.

Product is okay- not great.

The optical showed up in a large cardboard box that was clearly damaged. There were multiple puncture marks in the box and parts leaking out of the box- bolts, nuts and screws falling out of the box.

I opened the box and took inventory- all the big parts were there but almost all of the screws, nuts and bolts were missing.

I called the manufacturer six times over three days, all during business hours, before I was able to get through to someone who was able to send out replacement parts. I sent several emails that were never returned.

About two weeks later I got in the missing parts. It was simple enough to put together.

This elliptical feels cheep- I'm a bigger guy, 6'1- 235 lbs and I feel like I'm going to break this thing using it normally. I have had to re tighten a lot of the bolts as they are wiggling out of place with normal use. You get what you pay for I guess.

I lost 1000 dollars, do not buy this, bad quality and worst service ever

I received this product with a couple of broken parts, one of them is used to lift it so I cannot lift the treadmill. The other broken part is the cable which is used to connect the computer (or main controller unit) with the sides of the treadmill. I contacted the seller many, MANY time with no response, they have not answered any phone call or email I sent to them. I asked Amazon to help me and I received a message saying "You should contact the seller", which I did but I'm still have not any response from them.
I do not what to do, this is a 1000 dollars product and I cannot use it since the seller (and Amazon) have not sent me the parts to fix the problems.
Please, do not buy anything from this seller!!!!

I've have been running on the Proform 705 CST treadmill almost every day for the past two weeks since I got it and have, so far, been satisfied with it. It is smooth and stable while providing ample cushioning for my 5'8, 153lb frame. Its console's quick speed and incline buttons are very handy, and its display easy to read. I have yet to try any of its programmed workouts or Ifit, but its 12 mph max speed and 12% max incline are sufficient for my fitness purposes. Some of its caveats include its lack of pace in the customary min/mile, its broken heart rate monitor, and its wildly inaccurate calorie counter. In addition, its speakers sound terrible. However, these are only minor issues that haven't affected my workouts. I haven't tried any of the other treadmills in this price range, but I would recommend this one to any recreational/fitness runner on a budget.

performs better than expected

VERY pleased with the Proform 705 CST treadmill - 75 miles in the 3 weeks I've owned it. Speakers are much better than expected so I can really blast the music and enjoy a nice jog! Only disappoint was delivery - not only did they run over my sidewalk and destroy several pieces of bluestone (never returned my calls - it was $500.00 to repair), but a few pieces of the treadmill were cracked so obviously they dropped it at some point. Fortunately it didn't impact the performance of the treadmill. Highly recommend it, but get a floor mat - especially if you have hard wood floors. It is impossible to put together with 1 person, but relatively easy with 2 people - just carefully read the instructions and follow the correct order to assemble. (Sounds obvious, but an overzealous husband who "knows what he's doing" had to start over a few times.)

An Awesome piece of Equipment!!!!

We just got this delivered today and the delivery was excellent! we also paid to have it put together, which was also excellent!. They were fast and efficient and neat. they hauled away all the packing and tested the machine to make sure it worked. Thanks Directusa, you guys rock! The treadmill itself is super quiet and heavy and sturdy, I did ALOT of research before I decided on this model and I'm glad I did. It has and was not disappointing. I throughly recommend this model if you can afford to pay a little more to get a great machine. I'm a happy camper!!

The ramp only lifts 25 degrees

Here are the pros and cons:

Pros
-Well built and sturdy for the price
-Nice cushioned foot-pedals
-Great if you buy the ifit Live module
-The speaker system is very nice
-Easy to assemble--we did it in an hour and a half.
-Resistance was great
-Stride was good for me--I'm 5'6''
-not squeaky when your exercising and it doesn't wobble

Cons
-ifit Live membership is an extra $9.99 a month
-the ramp only rises to 25 degrees--the main reason I gave it 2 stars. It's barely a workout for me and I'm stuck -with it because it's too expensive to send back
-the fan is terrible--you can feel it literally 2 inches from the fan and no more. If this is important to you--look elsewhere
--the ramp is loud when it moves up and down--but lasts for less than a minute. The fan is loud too--so loud for so little output.

Neither a Pro or Con
Graphics are OK--not great but not terrible. Not very hi-tech but readable. Reminds me of the screens on cell phones when they first came out before they had color screens.

Bottom Line: If you want an ifit live machine and don't care about ramp height--its very nice but be willing to pay 9.99 a month after the first year--most modules give you one year free. Don't buy an ifit live module unless the 1-year membership activation is included.

If you don't care about ifit live--get a machine that has a higher ramp. 25 degrees is nowhere near what you may be used to at a gym--so if this is important for you take a look at proform's other models--they make one that lifts to 40 degrees and I wish I would've purchased that one.

If you don't care about the ramp height and don't care about ifit live--proform makes a similar machine to this without ifit live for about $200 cheaper.

Whisper quiet, works great!

This machine is incredibly quiet. I could use it with a sleeping baby in the same room with no problem, so big props for that. It arrived with some missing washers but a quick call to Proform took care of that and they shipped out the washers by end of the week. My husband managed to assemble it by himself. It works well, and while it's too soon to see the results, we really like it. The only con that we have noticed so far is that the built-in fan is a joke. It's a little worse than a toy fan...

Great Machine

I love this elliptical. It was by far the most sturdy and smoothest machine I have tried out at any of the retail stores. I am a little disappointed at the Ifit thing. This elliptical has a blue and white screen that looks very pixelated and not a color monitor that is needed for real IFit compatibility. Also, the heart rate monitor is horrible. I have everything hooked up correctly and it takes forever to kinda work. Other than those 2 little things this elliptical is well worth the price.

EDIT: My mistake about the heart rate monitor. I forgot to take the stickers off of the metal on the bars...lol. Everything works like a charm now.

So Far, So Good,,,,

We've had it for about 72 hours now. We didn't buy it from Amazon, but paid a similar price. We splurged and had someone deliver and assemble it. Considering the man does it all day, every day....and it still took him over two hours to complete assembly, I'd say it was money well spent!

We are NOT runners by nature, so take this review for what it's worth, as my opinion is going to vary from people who are already capable of running marathons. We are overweight, but not obese, this machine is supposed to be able to handle up to 300lbs, but neither of us approach the limit. That said, this machine is very stable, even when I'm not exactly the most graceful of people jogging on it. The water in my water bottle doesn't even twitch. It's not whisper quiet, but you can hear your music or the TV over it well enough, at a slightly elevated volume.

This unit DOES NOT include the iFit module, which is, currently, another $120-$130 to buy - the service/website is then free for the first year and then $80/year after that. We went out and bought that today. We're still putzing around with settings, but you can configure it to update onto Facebook and it tracks all of your workouts. You can have two different users on a module, so my husband and I will be tracked separately. You can track your calorie intake and burn, with commonly eaten food calorie counts available right on the website and the option to input calories on a freeform basis. There are spots to keep track of your measurements, etc. As you can see, it's a pretty nifty option...that DOESN'T come standard with the unit and, honestly, was one of the main reasons we bought this machine, thinking it did.

There is an iPod jack and wire that jacks into the headphone jack of your iPod. Playback is ok on the treadmill speakers. It's a little tinny, but...yeah, it's a treadmill not a stereo component. It beats having the earbuds in, at any rate.

The one thing that I really don't like about this unit is the very oddly shaped, cubish, fairly shallow cubbies for water/remotes/whatever. I have a 24oz waterbottle and it just doesn't sit in there right. I was worried it would fall out with the vibration but, as I mentioned earlier, the water doesn't even move at a slow jog. (I haven't gotten up any higher than a slow jog just yet...) and the cable remote also sits strangely in the other cubbie. I would have preferred a dedicated, obvious drink holder. As for the remote, I think I'm going to get a bit of adhesive backed hook and loop fastener to solve that problem.

The 10% incline and the max speed on this unit more than serves the need of two fairly sedentary people just getting back into being active. If you're already all big and bad and buff, you're probably going to want to keep looking for something else that's designed for your needs. All in all, a really good entry level machine.

Ok machine, but don't have high expectations.

I can pretty much say, "Ditto" to Jaclyn Womack's review. I use an IPhone instead of an Ipod, but the results are the same. Cup holders are badly thought out. Do have someone assemble it for you. The display is clear and easy to view in different light. The ride is comfortable and doesn't produce a lot of impact.

The built-in programs are very limited and can't be reprogrammed. For instance, if you select to train for a 5K and can't run it at the speeds and times that are pre-programmed, you are out of luck. You have to make changes on the fly. This is a very clumsy process and perhaps hazardous.

The heart rate monitor doesn't work, but I didn't expect it to so I won't complain. It doesn't work on our elliptical either. In truth it seldom works in devices in this price range. Also, the calorie counter is wildly inaccurate. It doesn't take into account you weight or Body Mass Index. If you really want to track these things, I suggest you check out heart rate monitors from Timex or Polar. I workout with a Timex.

I like that this treadmill has a lot of space at the front for you stride and arm motion. I think the belt size is adequate for anyone under 6 feet tall.

To get more functionality you will need to get with IFIT.COM. As Ms. Womack pointed out this is expensive. In addition to what she noted there is the cost of the cards which start at $30 each.

All in all I am satisfied with the device though I would have liked the ability to program some user-defined workouts and a little more functionality. But the price was right. I found a better price at Academy.

Decent Machine / OK Customer Service

So i got this treadmill because it's great deal with with no shipping and tax it's basically a steal.
Assembly fairly straight forward as instructions are very easy to follow but it does take a little bit of time to assemble.
Also this things is 200lbs so not super easy to maneuver.

All in all great shopping experience from amazon, super quick 3 days from order to my room) delivery and fairly straight forward installation.

This morning i was using it for the first time and this treadmill seems great. Very solid and fairly soft to run on.
However, after running on it for about 1.5 miles it stopped working. Since the customer service is closed today i will call tomorrow and see what's up. I'm a bit disappointed with the fact that the belt stopped working after only 1.5 miles but i suspect it's not a problem with these machines but just the one i have. So once i deal with customer service i hope to update this review with how they handled it.
UPDATE: Customer service is average, takes a while to get a hold of them and they shipped the replacement belt in a day or so, but they use that UPS innovations nonsense which basically takes like a week to arrive.
My treadmill issue was the belt that slipped off (i suspect it got moved during transport) and it got a bit torn up.

I would suggest for anyone that gets this to open up the motor cover and take a look at the belt to make sure it's sliding off the motor since these machines are being shipped it's sort of expected.

Good deal, way better treadmill than I had before

We've had the treadmill now for a couple weeks. I really like it. We had a proform 630DS bought from craigslist a couple years ago and it was dying. Based on Consumer Reports ratings and other research, I decided on this model.

The setup wasn't too bad; just follow the directions. It will go faster with 2 people.

It's UBER quiet. But, that's based off my previous treadmill that sounded like a freight train. The motor, deck, supports, etc, are all very sturdy from what I can tell.

My wife likes the quick buttons and the pre-programmed workouts and uses it at least every other day. I usually run 1 - 2 times per week at 8mph and 4.5 grade with occasional sprints of 10 and 12...I have no idea if that's good or not compared to other users. There is no slippage reported and the deck stays comfortable.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this product. Am very happy with it. If something changes, I'll update the review.

I learned the hard way

I ordered this treadmill direct from Proform. The customer service on the shipping and delivery was very good. I opted for the in home delivery as well. The installers were very nice and professional.

That was the good. Now more about the actual treadmill. I read reviews all over the net, and as it turns out most of the reviews from the factory direct treadmills are simply ads. I even read the reviews on Sears and Dicks for this and the lesser models from Proform. The theme seemed to be "good for the price". And for $899 with free shipping I thought that seemed reasonable. And it seemed to have the right specs and cool features. Once the unit was set up it was clear this is not commercial Gym equipment. The handrails shifted and wobbled terribly. The belt looked like it was ready to curl up and the side panel on the deck came was lose. I started it up and it was fairly quiet. So I started walking and it wasn't bad. Now if I was sure that walking was all I wanted to do, then it would be ok. But then I decided to do a light jog. And as my feet went "thud & rattle" with every step it became clear that running on this thing would be a short lived miserable experience. Now mind you I am all of 150lbs.

Shortly after I got off I went back online and found a nice re-manufactured Precor 966i delivered for $200 more than I paid for this one. I could have also gotten a Star Trac 4500 for the same price or less that the Pro From. Now it took a little shopping and talking, but well worth it. Now you can get the extended warranty on the Pro Form, but I feel confident that you will be using that warranty. Now I will be eating the return shipping cost and restocking fee to return the Pro Form. And once I get this bad boy back on that truck I will be a happy camper. Learn from my mistake.

If you intend to do any running, run away from this one and get a better brand. If you think you need >3HP and 60" because of expected use or your height, keep in mind 60" and >3hp of crap is still crap. If you walk, just find a 2-2.5 HP motor from a better brand. This is just not a good value or piece of equipment. With so many online options available from Amazon, Auction sites and classifieds I see no reason to settle for this unit. And if this is their top unit, I shudder to think about the cheaper models.

Update:
Proform has arranged for the unit to be disassembled, and picked up. So a plus for customer service.

Great Treadmill - Horrible Delivery

This treadmill is fantastic. I can't believe how much my family loves it. Aside from a few small quirks, we're thrilled with this treadmill. However, the experience of taking delivery and assembling the treadmill was just the opposite. So I'm splitting my review into two parts: the treadmill itself and the delivery/assembly process.

THE GOOD: The Treadmill

This treadmill is fantastic. It comes loaded with whistles and bells. But more important to me than the features is the feel of the treadmill itself. The base is firm and sturdy, but the treadmill surface and bed are well cushioned to absorb impact. The result is a smooth landing with every stride. I owned another NordicTrak treadmill before this one and it rocked and squeaked loudly every time my body landed another step. We have a home gym in our garage and we used to have to turn the TV up very loud whenever we used the old treadmill, but this one is much quieter.

I strongly urge you to consider adding the Proform Ifit Module if you purchase this treadmill. You're already investing a lot of money in this equipment; it's just a little more money to add the iFit Module and you get a ton more functionality out of the treadmill. The manufacturer sometimes has good sales. I got mine from them directly for $50, and that includes a year of service on their website.

The treadmill has the usual speed and incline controls, as well as manual and preset programs for different workouts and levels.

Other great features:

* Cup Holders: Yeah, just like our cars, a good treadmill needs a good set of cupholders.

* Book Holder: The book rack is sized just right for paperbacks, magazines, and maybe small hardback books. I doubt you could fit a large hardback book. But if you really can read a novel while you're exercising, then you probably aren't exercising hard enough.

* Two Variable Speed Fans

* Audio Jack and Speakers: OK, this is probably my very favorite feature. I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed hooking up my iPhone to the audio cable they provided and playing my iTunes through the speakers. The speakers aren't fantastic, but I just need something to keep me entertained while I work out. I usually podcast talk shows anyway (like Adam Carolla), so I don't need incredible fidelity. The cable is pretty short, but it's long enough to set your MP3 player in a cup holder or on the book rack.

And if you add the iFit module, you can load the iFit app on your iPhone and add routes from Google Maps. Want to work out someplace unique today? Create a route through San Francisco or Chicago or even do laps around the lake at Epcot Center. The iFit module sends your progress through your WiFi network and the iPhone app reads your progress and moves the map while you run. Amazing! There are a couple of quirks that I don't like about the iFit module, but I'll review that item separately.

THE UGLY: Delivery & Assembly

First I should explain that I received this item through the Amazon Vine program. I won't explain all the details here, but you can click the "What's this?" link at the top of this review if you need more information about the Vine program. What's important for the sake of this review is that this treadmill (just the treadmill, not the iFit module) is a freebie for me. The reason I bring that up is that the delivery process was so bad and the treadmill was so badly damaged in shipping that I would have just returned it if I had paid for it. But that wasn't an option in this case.

So what happened...?

The shipping company contacted me and let me know that the item was in transit and they wanted to schedule a delivery date with me. So far so good. We picked a date and they told me they'd contact me later in the week to schedule a morning or afternoon delivery. That meant I would have to take off work to stay home, but OK. When they called back a few days later, they told me that the item was in their warehouse and asked about scheduling a time for delivery at the end of the week. Since I was excited to pick up the treadmill and wasn't excited about missing work, I asked them where their warehouse was located and asked about a willcall pickup. It turns out they were about 15 minutes or so from my office, so it was a lot simpler for me just to run down there and pick it up during lunch.

When I got to their warehouse they drove the forklift up to my pickup truck with the treadmill on the lift. The carton is about the size and weight of a coffin with a big dead guy in it, except that this carton had been roughed up pretty badly. I could see by the way it was resting on the forklift that something had broken in the middle and that the two ends were sagging badly. I took some quick pictures of the damaged carton and then asked the guys at the dock about the damage. They said, "it's ok - it's normal". I looked around their dock at some of the other containers and saw that they weren't kidding: for those dirtbags, this beat up container was completely normal. But since I'm not exactly a paying customer, I knew I didn't have many options.

So I made a note on the paperwork that the carton was beat up and then took it home to see how bad it was. It was pretty bad. Although there was a ton of packing material--very sturdy wooden bracing--there wasn't anything bracing the bottom of the box and that's where they packed the most delicate item, the upper control console. The console was hit pretty hard and had some big dimples in the plastic. Also, the plastic shroud that covers the area at the front and front sides of the treadmill close to where your feet strike were cracked and broken.

I called the manufacturer, but they were confused about how I had received the item in the first place (where did you buy it? why not call them then?). I also sent emails to their help desk and to their marketing department, but neither one responded. So I decided to just bust out the toolbox and see what I could do. I managed to get all of the structural plastic pieces of the shroud that lifts and angles when the treadmill inclines back into place. The rest of the damage was cosmetic, so there were no more show-stoppers and I was ready to start assembly.

TOOLS REQUIRED

Although some of the tools are included in the packaging, the job will go much faster and easier if you use your own good quality tools. And if you don't already have the tools you need, it's worth a trip to Lowe's or Home Depot to get what you need. The treadmill is a big investment and good tools will make it go better.

You need:

* Good Phillips head screwdrivers of various sizes. The heads of the screws included in the hardware pack are kind of soft and they are easy to strip accidentally. Good screwdrivers will help.

* Allen Wrenches (also called Hex Keys). If you don't know what an Allen wrench is, picture the little talking wrench guy in the instructions from anything you've ever bought from Ikea. An Allen wrench is an L-shaped tool with hexagonal heads on both ends. Most importantly, the two legs of the L shape are different lengths. Although the hardware package comes with a big Allen wrench already, it has two long ends with different sized hex heads on each end (two wrenches in one). It's really hard to use this tool, because some of the Allen screws don't have enough clearance for that long tool, so you really need the short end of a good Allen wrench.

In general, the assembly wasn't terribly difficult, although it's a big bulky item and it really does take two people. But my biggest complaint about the assembly was the hardware. First of all, the way the installation manual was printed the scale of the parts was a little off, so it made it tricky to tell which sized screw you were supposed to use on some of the steps. Also, the self-tapping screws were pretty soft and the holes they were going into were very hard. So it took extra time and care to screw them in without stripping the heads. My thirteen year old son was helping me and the screws were too tight for him to screw.

But all gripes aside, once we finished the assembly, everything fit real well and the treadmill is very sturdy. I can live with the cosmetic damage. One of the speakers comes and goes, so I doubt it will live very long. But the treadmill itself is very sturdy and my family has already put a couple hundred miles on it.

So my concluding advice is: If you are somewhat handy and have a friend who can help out, then you should be able to handle the assembly. If not, consider paying extra to have it professionally delivered and installed. And hopefully the professional installer will also take better care of the delivery than the normal delivery monkeys that handled my order.
